CAEP: A New Accrediting Body for Educator Preparation (10/22/2010)

Welcome to CAEP: the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

October 22, 2010, was a historic day for educator preparation. The NCATE and TEAC governing boards voted to create a single accrediting body for educator preparation. The two organizations will consolidate into one organization, CAEP, within a two-year period. The new organization will offer accreditation options.

The two accreditors have been working towards this consolidation via a Joint Design Team composed of equal numbers of NCATE and TEAC representatives. Through the consolidation, we hope to create not only greater efficiencies in accreditation, but to raise the performance of candidates. This goal will be achieved by raising the standards for evidence of program quality.

As the consolidation moves forward, related information will be on www.caepsite.org. You will find a link to it from the NCATE and TEAC Websites.

We urge members of the field at large to actively engage with CAEP. Your service on accreditation committees and related volunteer positions is essential.

As a new accrediting body, we must demonstrate that the organization serves as an instrument of reform, and is part of the solution to the nation's education needs. Within the functions of accountability and improvement, we must encourage innovation and research and development. We believe that CAEP accreditation options promote these goals, and look forward to working with you to see them realized.

Sincerely,

James G. Cibulka
